Anne of Green Gables

Emmy-Anne recently worked through a Study Guide on the book Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery. It took her about a month and a half to complete it all.

This was her first time to read Anne of Green Gables and she LOVED it!

Her Study Guide had her read two to three chapters at a time and then she had a series of questions to answer after each set of readings.

Here are a few examples of the pages of questions....

All in all the study guide had 121 questions for the 38 chapters in the story.

English lessons she dealt with in the study.

She had a page to fill out on the main character, Anne.

On this page she had to write out the setting of the story, main conflict, how the conflict was resolved, point of view in which the story was told, and whether or not her opinion of any character changed by the end of the story.

This was a Cause & Effect page. She had to fill in the chart with decisions that a character made & what happened as a result of those decisions, or events from the story and what caused them.

This was a character page where she had to write out various characters names, descriptions, and relationship to the main character.

This was the Vocabulary word page. As she read through the story she had to write out any words that she wasn't familiar with and then look up their definitions.

She really enjoyed reading Anne of Green Gables and she said she loved this Study Guide too, though towards the end of it she said she was happy it was coming to an end as it was a long one.

I found this Study Guide for free at Valeria Iona Academy online. They have the study guide posted on CurrClick for free as well and they also have other study guides on Currclick that you can purchase HERE.

St. Pattys Fun!

We had a lot of fun celebrating St. Patricks Day this year.

A few Shamrocks in our dining room

The books we read

We learned that leprechauns are really good at tricks.

We took this really long sandwich bag and tried to blow it up. It took a lot of breaths to get this bag even close to being blown up.

We then tried blowing up the sandwich bag the way Leprechauns do. We held it away from our face and blew just one big blow into it. It blew right up with that one blow!!

We also learned that when a Leprechaun looks at light it sees rainbows. We put on some special Leprechaun glasses to see the world through a Leprechauns eyes.

We turned all of the lights off before each person put the glasses on. When we flipped on the lights their were rainbows everywhere in the room that their was any light.

The kids had fun walking all around the house looking for the different rainbows.

We learned that Leprechauns fish with green worms in order to catch green fish. We magically made some Leprechaun worms from Leprechaun Goo.

Pouring our Leprechaun Goo into the water.

And 30 seconds later we had a Leprechaun worm!

Some of our worms were very, very long!

Houston thought that our green Leprechaun worms looked like Leprechaun snot!

We also learned that Leprechauns like to hide. They don't like to be seen. Unfortunately we couldn't get any Leprechauns shipped to us because UPS doesn't like to ship little green men but they did send us some Leprechaun eggs.

The special thing about Leprechaun eggs is that they disappear. It's the baby Leprechauns in them trying to hide that makes them disappear.

We poured some of our Leprechaun eggs into this tube. We came back 3 hours later and they were gone- all except this one egg which you can see floating here on the top of the water. (You might notice that the egg you can see on top of the water is much larger than the eggs we poured into the tube. That is because Leprechaun eggs grow really, really fast). We began pouring the water out of our tube and suddenly our Leprechaun eggs appeared. You see, they weren't actually gone....they were just hiding in the water. :-) We did this again but instead of pouring the water off of them we took a little green food coloring and poured it into the tube of water and their were our Leprechaun eggs hiding from us again. We took the rest of our eggs and poured them into the bath tub that night. Of course, they disappeared but once we drained the bath, their they were in the bottom of the tub trying to hide from us. We also learned that Leprechaun eggs can bounce really really high! It's how Leprechauns get around with them being so little and all.

We had fun making a special Irish Dinner.

We had corned beef, cabbage, and red potatoes.

Emmy made this loaf of Irish Soda Bread.

And we made a special Leprechaun marshmallow salad.

Here the kids are pouring "Leprechaun powder" (pistachio pudding) into our salad to make it turn green.

They thought it was pretty cool to watch the marshmallows, crushed pineapple, and cool whip turn green!

For Dessert the kids made Shamrock shaped sugar cookies.

Houstons Birthday Pics

Here are a few pics from Houstons 13th Birthday.

Last picture taken as a 12 year old.

First picture taken as a 13 year old.

We gave him this present and made him think it was his main birthday present from us.

He asked for Legos for his birthday but he loves Bionicles too- so he was excited!

Then we surprised him with this gift.

It's what he asked for but didn't think he was getting. Can you say excited!!!!

Emmy decorated his chair.

This picture doesn't do it justice- the whole thing is made from tiny legos and he completed it in 3 hours.
