18 Months and An Answer to Prayer(s)

The 24th of May marked the year and a half anniversary of being in our new home!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Their was the time that we were unemployed and were getting down to our last bit of food in the house.  We prayed and 2 days later a friend (who didn't know our food situation) showed up unannounced on our doorstep. She was in tears and told me that God had placed it on her heart that morning during her prayer time to clean out her refrigerator and pantry and bring it all over to us.
Their was the time that we were having vehicle issues and we were not in a position to purchase a new car. We prayed. A few weeks later we got a phone call from someone that had a car.....to GIVE us!
Their was that time during our year of unemployment that I wanted to take a meal to a friend who just had a baby. If I did so though...would we have enough food to get us through the month? I prayed. I went to the store convinced that God would provide for us the rest of the month. As I was gathering a few things to make dinner for our friends, I stumbled across a 20$ bill in the grocery isle. I took it to management. They told me no one had claimed it so I could kept it. God provided the money to make a meal for our friends.
And during that same unemployment period, their was the time that a bill came in that we didn't have the money to pay. We prayed. Later that week when I went out to get our mail I found cash in an envelope with no return address on it. It covered the bill we needed to pay.
Their was the time we were moving from Tennessee to North Carolina and we drove over to NC to find a house to live in. Housing in the area we wanted to live (near Bryan's work) was incredibly high priced. We prayed. On our 2nd day there God lead us to a home that we fell head over heals for....and it was in our price range and that exact area we wanted.
These are just a few instances. I am not saying God gives us every single thing we have always asked for. Their have been plenty of times through the years when we prayed for something and the answer was not what we had hoped....but looking back we can say that in the end it was always just what we needed or in some cases, didn't need. I am saying though that God provides. He is faithful to provide for our every need and I believe He finds joy in pouring out his blessings upon his children. I believe he cares about every detail of our lives.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

When Bryan and I bought our very first home, his mom blessed us by passing on a complete set of living room furniture to us. An Ethan Allen sectional sofa that they had originally paid really big bucks for. That was 15 years ago. That sofa survived 6 moves and served us well! It took a lot of wear and tear from our family of 8 with multiple pets. When we moved into our current home we bought a slip cover to put over it. That worked well this past year for us but then the poor thing finally caved in and began breaking apart. First a hole in the side and then a leg broke off which meant when you sat on one end of the sofa and someone sat down on the other end, you bounced into the air. LOL! It had become evident that it was time for a new sofa.  I began looking around, determined to find something at a thrift or used store for a decent price. I also prayed. I really wanted a nice sofa but knew it wasn't in the budget this year. Then 2 weeks ago Bryan emailed from work and told me one of the guys he works with was moving and had a couch for sale. He was asking 250$. Bryan said he was going to offer him 100$ and see what he said. We all prayed. This past week Bryan emailed when he was out of town and said he had heard back and we were getting the sofa for 100$!

Then 2 weeks ago, my neighbor Maria came over to tell me their was an estate sale going on around the corner from us. She and I walked down to check it out. Ever since we moved into our new home I have been longing for a recliner to go with the sofa in our living room. Recliners are expensive. Especially the swivel ones that rock and recline. I could not see paying 500$ or more for one. I really couldn't see paying even half of that. I had been keeping my eyes out at thrift stores. So Maria and I walk into the estate sale and their sitting in the living room is a blue recliner. Blue and brown are my living room colors. It was priced at 50$! We sat in it and checked it all out and it was in perfect condition. Seemed almost new to us. Maria is great at bargaining prices and she offered the guy 30$ for me and to my surprise, he took it!

A new couch and a new recliner. Two recent answers to prayers! Thank you God! Thank you for hearing us and providing for us!

Check out my new living room furniture......

My 30$ rocker/recliner. It swivels all the way around and reclines. I have claimed it as "my" seat when we are all gathered in the living room watching movies.

Check out the small bakers rack that I found at the estate sale too.

I had been looking for one just like this to hold our small crock pot and pots and pans. The cheapest I had found was at Hobby Lobby and it was $60.00 on sale. I paid $10 for this one!

And the following, while not something I had prayed over, is just something I added recently to our front walkway. I found them both at Hobby Lobby on sale.

"And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him." 1John 5:14-15

☂ Celebrating the Start of Spring ☂

We celebrated the start of Spring this year by decorating sugar cookies in the shape of butterflies.

We always use the same sugar cookie recipe when we make them. The one I shared, HERE. I've been making it for years now and we love it.

Foil Embossed Art

The girls recently made some foil embossed art.

They started out by gluing yarn onto a piece of cardboard into the design that they wanted.

They then covered the cardboard with tin foil and gently pressed the tin foil out over their yarn until their design was clearly seen.

They then used sharpie markers to color in their designs. I thought they turned out beautiful! The top one is Natalie's and the bottom is Annie's.

This was a simple project and one the girls really enjoyed.

My Simple Diary: Week 22 of 2013

Outside My Window:

We have baby birds!!

There are 4 baby birds in the nest. On Wednesday one of them fell out of the nest. I wasn't sure at first what to do. The nest is right above our front door and it was obvious the bird had fallen and yet it didn't seem hurt. It wasn't yet flying though and we were afraid if we just left it on the porch that it wouldn't survive. I wasn't sure if the mother bird would feed it with it not being in the nest. The poor mother bird was sitting on one of my planters crying out over and over again. I had heard that if you touch a baby bird or the nest that the mother bird would abandon it but in more recent years I had heard that that was a myth. I called Bryan and he agreed that if we could get the bird back into the nest that would probably be best. The problem is, this next is above our front door and sits at about 10 feet from the ground. Even on our ladder, Annie and I were still too short to reach the nest. We borrowed a taller ladder from our neighbor and Annie was able to reach high enough to gently put the bird back. So far the mother bird has returned to the nest but we are not sure how it is doing. I'm hoping no more falls happen as the nest seems awfully crowded. We are also hoping that the baby bird that fell was not injured in a way we couldn't see and if it was that it will heal just fine.

They are so precious to listen too. The only down side of the location of the nest is that we have a lot of bird poop on our front door mat each day. I've been washing it off but it just keeps on coming. LOL! The kids have really enjoyed watching the momma bird through our window as she flies away and then brings back food for her babies.

What We Have Been Watching:

I rented it this past week and I enjoyed it! Their is one character that was hard to swallow and get past and some scenes as well but I enjoyed the overall storyline and most of the characters. I will warn if you are a Jane Austen fan, don't expect this to be clean like Jane Austen novels. That was my biggest hang up with the film. I thought the movie ending redeemed itself a bit. I found it interesting that the movie carries some heavy topics and yet keeps the feel throughout pretty light. Of course my favorite part was hearing the women (and man) in the book club discuss Austen's books.

A favorite quote from the movie....

"Never underestimate the power of a well written letter."

Recent Happenings:

Bryan, Houston, & Emmy returned on Friday from Shocco. They had a good week prepping for camp season. First camp of the 2013 season kicks off, TODAY, May 27th.

On Friday evening Bryan started feeling sick. Heavy muscles aches and really weak. Within an hour he was in bed and running a high fever. He spent the weekend really sick with high fevers. Today his fever seems to have finally broke but he is still weak if he is up too long so he is working from home today. I'm so thankful he is doing better. He must have caught something out at Shocco. So far, he is the only one that got sick.

I was able to get some deep cleaning done this past week while the olders and Bryan were away. Washing of rugs and bedspreads.....re-organizing some kitchen cabinets and our food pantry....cleaning of baseboards.......stuff like that. Annie took on the reorganization of the walk in pantry off of the laundry room- the room where everything gets thrown when we don't want to mess with it right then. Felt good to tackle some of those things that I normally don't have time for but we took the week off of school which allowed it.

I won 2 contests recently. One was for a DVD on a ministry in India through a blog contest. The other was at an online book party for a book I shared about a couple of weeks ago, Seaside Harmony.  I won 5 copies of book 1 and 2 in the series!! I am sooo excited! I'm not yet sure what I will be doing with all of the copies. Maybe sending to people that I know want to read the series or offering some as give-a-ways here on my blog? I also won a beautiful purse in the contest! It arrived this past week. Check it out.......

I received an email this morning about another blog contest win! I won a copy of a bible study on Ephesians. I am so excited and look forward to it arriving too!

Our neighbors found a stray baby kitten in their yard this past week. We helped to care for it one evening while they were staying over at a family members house. Of course all of my animal loving children loved on it like crazy.

Isn't he a cutie! We would have loved to have kept him ourselves but already having 4 pets, we are not feeling in a position to take on another at the moment.

On Saturday afternoon, Emmy, Annie, and I headed down to Belk to find Emmy a summer dress for the upcoming last dance of the school year with our ballroom dance class. Annie had already found her a dress last month and Emmy needed something that she could wear to the dance but to church this summer too. Em loves fashion but truly hates shopping. She finds it to be a big chore and gets frustrated with it easily so we were all excited when she was able to find something she loved right away-- and it fit! She has a very slender figure which makes finding clothing that fits right hard at times. She found a really beautiful dress- I adore the colors.

The dance is a Hawaiian Lua. Here is a sneak peek at Emmy and Ally's dresses. I had a gift card to Belk and Em's dress was on sale so we ended up paying only 6$ for it!

In My Kitchen:

With Bryan, Houston, & Em gone this past week I decided to give myself a bit of a break and go easy. I made taco salad one night and the rest of the week was frozen pizzas, corn dogs, sandwiches, and other easy stuff. Not exactly a really nutritious week for us but I did throw in red grapes, fresh strawberries from our garden and fresh veggies and salad on each day to help boost it a bit. I will admit that the break from the kitchen was nice.

My friend Maria's refrigerator went out on them on Monday of this past week and so they brought over some food to store in ours until they can get another one purchased.

On Wednesday Maria brought over a plate of dinner she had made for me.

She is such an amazing cook! These are fried pork chops, homemade refried beans, and green squash with a cheese topping. This is the 2nd time I have had her pork chops and they are amazing! What's funny is, I never liked pork chops until I tasted Maria's. I am going to have her show me soon how she makes them.

1000 Gifts ~ My Eucharisteo's {1-45}

I sort of feel like I am jumping in the boat a little late. But then again....it's never too late to give thanks to the Lord! For quite a while now I have longed to read Ann Voskamps book, 1000 gifts. I've followed her blog for some time now and God has used it often to speak to me right where I was at. I've entered some contests to win the book, to no avail.  I rarely pay full price for a book, knowing that I can find what I want at used book stores if I am patient, but having looked for a year on every visit, it was becoming apparent that this book wasn't going to be an easy find at used stores. I kept thinking about ordering it but for whatever reason, really none- in particular other than my continuing quest to find it used, months went by and I didn't order it. Then I did. Just a little over a week ago, I caved and I ordered it. I was able to use some Amazon points to pay for it. It arrived this past Tuesday and I immediately felt lead to dig into it even though I was already reading through several books for reviews. And I now understand why my year of searching at used book stores was futile. It is not a book that you get rid of. It's one of those books that I am positive I will return to again and again in the months and years to come.

God has a way with His timing. I am sure God would have used the book in my life a year ago had I ordered or won it then, but He knew it was just what I needed in this very season, right now. He is touching me with it and speaking to me through it. My soul has felt weary and burdened lately with hardships and mistakes from the past. I've felt the oppression circling in on me, some days more than others, stealing my joy. 1000 gifts has been a light upon me and truly a gift for my hungry soul. For a while now God has been placing on my heart to live more fully in each moment- which ultimately is exactly what this book is about. Living fully and receiving the joy in each and every moment. Giving thanks to God for all of the moments he blesses our lives with daily. God has been convicting me to focus more inward for a while now (on our family) and less outward (social media, etc.). I can see just from putting this book into practice for not even a week now, how this book is encouraging me in the direction God has been convicting me.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1000 Gifts is a dare to live fully right where you are. Often as I read through my books I run across a verse or two in a book that I long to underline or highlight and remember. Even in my fiction books this happens to me. With 1000 gifts my highlighter has been working overtime.
Ann shares in 1000 gifts her own journey into grace and full life. Into recognizing and giving thanks to God for each moment. Her journey, like all of ours, has faced trials and tribulations all their own. Faith, doubt, questions....it's all in there. Their is so much that I could share about this book but then this blog post would end up chapters long. So instead I am going to share a few of my favorite parts (so far) and bible verses that Ann shares. I am currently just starting Chapter 6 of 11.
Ann talks about all of the bucket lists that are so popular today. I have one. Do you? The books with titles like 1000 Places to See Before You Die. While in and of itself their is nothing wrong with having a bucket list of things you would love to do in your lifetime, what about the here and now? What about each moment of each day that God gives us right where we are?
Ann shares how God lead her to the point of realizing that Eucharisteo is the central symbol of Christianity. The root word of eucharisteo is charis, meaning "grace." Eucharisteo, thanksgiving, envelopes the Greek word chara, meaning "joy." Deep chara joy is found only at the table of the euCHARisteo- the table of thanksgiving. So is the height of our chara joy dependent on the depths of our eucharisteo thanks? (pg. 32-33).
Ann writes, "Non-eucharisteo, ingratitude, as the fall-- humanity's discontent with all that God freely gives. That is what has scraped me raw: ungratefulness. Then to find Eden, the abundance of Paradise, I'd need to forsake my non-eucharisteo, my bruised and bloodied ungrateful life, and grab hold to eucharisteo, a lifestyle of thanksgiving. Might a life of eucharisteo really work the miracle of the God-communion?"
1 Corinthians 2:7- " His secret purpose framed from the very begining is to bring us to our full glory."
Have you ever looked up the word thanskgiving to see how often it is mentioned in the Bible? It's easy to read the verses and overlook the significance of it. Jesus was constantly giving thanks. He was full of eucharisteo. Even when Jesus was facing the abandonment of God, he stopped and gave thanks. He gave thanks for that which was about to break Him and crush Him and wound Him.
Jesus came that we might live life to the full the bible says! In Luke 17:17-19 NIV, when did the leper receive salvation- the saving to the full- whole life? When he returned and gave thanks. If our fall was the non-eucharisteo, the ingratitude, then salvation must be intimately related to eucharisteo, the giving of thanks. Thanksgiving- giving thanks in everything- prepares the way that God might show us His fullest salvation in Christ. Ann writes on page 40, "The act of sacrificing thank offerings to God- even for the bread and cup of cost, for cancer and crucifixion- this prepares the way for God to show us His fullest salvation from bitter, angry, resentful lives and from all sin that estranges us from Him. At the Eucharist, Christ breaks His heart to heal ours- Christ, the complete accomplishment of our salvation."
Gratitude bestows reverence, allowing us to encounter everyday epiphanies, those transcendent moments of awe that change forever how we experience life and the world. ~Sarah Ban Breathnach
And so with those thoughts, I begin my journey of journaling my own Eucharisteo's- 1000 of God's gifts to me.
♛ Girls Just Want to Have Fun ~ Part 2 ♛
On April 21st, Natalie & Ally had their last spring Girls Just Wanna Have Fun small group from church.
Up until this point they had been learning about the princesses in the bible as well as learning the good manners and proper etiquette that a princess should have.
This last meeting was a special time for the dads and daughters together. It was a sweet time of celebration.
Table my friend Alicia set for the dads and daughters.
The girls served their dads salad and horderves and then the dads served their daughters.
This young man is the older brother of one of the girls. He stood in for the dad who wasn't able to be there. So sweet!
Alicia surprised the girls with a special cake.
The girls singing a song together.
Annie helped me with food prep and Emmy helped Alicia by watching their youngest girl, Annalise, during the party.
Annalise loves our girls and we love her! She is so adorable! She is adopted from Ethiopia.
After cake time the girls danced the waltz with their dads.
Bryan cutting a rug on the dance floor. It was hilarious!
At the end of the party the dads each crowned their daughters with tieras and said a word to each of them about how they would always be their princesses no matter how old they got but more importantly they would always be God's princess.
One of the moms provided roses for the dads to present to the girls when they crowned them.
Annalise was crowned by daddy too.
The girls with their daddy's.
I LOVE this picture! My girls are so blessed to have such an amazing dad that is so involved with their lives and such an amazing example to them. I thank God daily for Bryan! I have often said it will be hard for my girls to find a husband one day because Bryan sets the standard high and he is adored by all of his girls!
The girls small group took the month of May off and will start up again for a short 6 week summer session on June 2nd. The girls are looking forward to it!
