OUR THOUGHTS:

Definition of Geography:

1. The study of the earth and its features and of the distribution of life on the earth, including human life and the effects of human activity.
2. The physical characteristics, especially the surface features, of an area.

I have always loved geography. I find the study of the earth to be fascinating. I love learning about anything that relates to the continents and earths surface. I have noticed that my kids love it too. Their is one area of Geography that I felt very weak in for years though; map skills. Even as a young adult, you could give me a map to read and I would often feel like you had put a foreign language in front of me. Through the years I have gotten better with my map reading skills but that is because what I have learned, I taught myself (with some guidance from my husband). This was a huge hole in my own education, meaning that I was simply not ever taught how to properly use/read a map. I have been determined that it would not be a hole within my children's education. I am always looking for new and fresh ways to teach Geography so I was thrilled when we were given the opportunity to review this book. I have always loved Evan Moor products but had not had any experience with this geography series, until we were mailed this book to review.

I have been using this book with my 4th and 2nd grader for this review. The lessons are to the point and short each day. On average one lesson takes us about 15-20 minutes to cover, sometimes less. The book takes a very hands-on approach to learning. Throughout the book are map related activities that help to learn the map skills taught. Each lesson contains 3 pages. The first page of every lesson is always a map and the following 2 pages have questions to write answers to. You spread out these questions over a couple of days per week and then on Fridays their is a challenge activity that relates to the map activity that was covered that week. Fridays challenge often takes a bit longer than the usual lessons. It was our experience that the girls wanted to do more than the two questions assigned per day in the lessons so they would often keep going and complete a full weeks worth of lessons in just 2-3 days.

Each of the lessons are very self explanatory which allows these lessons to be very independent for students with a very hands-off teacher approach- if desired. My 4th grader has been able to be very independent in her work with this book. My 2nd grader has needed some guidance- usually with me reading the lesson to her as she has a reading delay due to speech issues.

The book/program was originally designed to be used with a classroom. It therefore offers overhead transparencies and informative teacher pages for each new topic. These are located in the back of the book. The teacher pages offer extra information but it has been our experience that the information is not needed for the lessons to be thoroughly taught. I wasn't sure how homeschool friendly these books would be, being that they were initially designed for a classroom. Sometimes materials designed for classrooms do not work well on a more one on one tutoring situation such as homeschooling but I have been very satisfied with how user friendly the program is for us as homeschoolers.

One of the things that I have really appreciated about Book 3 is that it covers regions of the United States within it's lessons. My 4th grader has been studying U.S. states this year and this has been a wonderful addition to those lessons. As she is learning various map skills she has also been learning more about the various states through the lessons in this book. On that note I have to share that I really love the maps that are used with each lesson. I wanted to share a few of them with you.

Our girls were thrilled when they reached week 6 and saw this map of our state. I was surprised that the map shows Hoover on it as most maps just show Birmingham. One of the lessons with this map was to introduce what a grid and index is. On the two pages following this map the girls had 10 questions total to answer using this map and a challenge to complete.

Massachusetts map

Waterways of the U.S. This map is from week 13 and covers vocabulary such as gulf, land form, waterway, and more. A few examples of the questions that went along with this map are;

1) Which states does the Arkansas river run through?
2) Which four kinds of waterways are shown on the map?
3) Which two states share the Columbia River?

This map of California introduces what a tourist map is.

Both of my girls have enjoyed doing these lessons. The lessons seem to bring about just the right amount of fun and interest to the topics covered and they are short and sweet which makes doing them every day doable. While I tend to sway away from workbook type lessons as much as possible, I do believe that using a workbook or lessons such as the ones offered in this book are vital when laying a good solid foundation with a topic such as map skills. I have noticed that both of my girls are gaining a good foundation in map skills and reading maps from these lessons and that very much pleases me. We pulled out a map of our state the other day and they were able to recognize, locate, and read key parts of the map as a result of the lessons that they have been covering in this book.

Houstons 14th Birthday Celebration!

When we asked Houston what he wanted to do this year for his birthday he said "stay home and play computer games with dad all day, watch a movie together as a family, get Taco Bell for lunch (but bring it home to eat), have frozen pizza for dinner during our family movie, and a cookies and cream cake for dessert. *Grin*

And that is just what he got. *Wink* Houston is my homebody boy. He gets that from me. He would rather be home than anywhere else. He enjoys going places but is always glad to get back home and when we go on trips, he gets homesick pretty fast. It therefore seemed so fitting that he wanted to celebrate his special day at "home".

Here he is opening his gift from us.

A World War 2 game for the Wii.

With his cookies and cream cake- it has crushed oreos inside the cake. He loved it!

Our 14 year old Birthday boy!

He has some birthday money from grandparents but has only spent a small portion of it so far. Last week he bought a pocket knife. Our first born is growing up!

But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. (2 Timothy 3:14-15 Holy Bible ESV)

My Simple Diary~ Week 13 of 2011

Outside my window...

We had a warm, bright, and sunny week last week. Most of the week was in the low 80's. This weekend was full of lots of rainy thunderstorms and some intense lightning. We had a beautiful lightning show on the drive home from church last night. Looks like the storms brought another cold front in as this next week is going to be cooler- though not cold with highs in the upper 60's and low 70's. I've spent time this past week pulling all of the clothing bins out of the garage that have our spring and summer clothes in them and I've slowly been working on transferring winter into those bins and spring/summer out. In Alabama you always have to leave some long pants and sweaters out for a while though as evenings can still get chilly (and even occasionally days) in the Springtime. I love that about Alabama though.

This week I am thankful for...

A beautiful worship service last night at church. A stirring message from our Pastor. The safe return of a team from our church from India and the testimonies that they brought back with them. Bryan being able to take time off this past week- we really enjoyed his time at home.

Prayer Requests for the week...

Please continue to pray for us as we do our home/land search. We currently have 3 very strong possibilities and will be going out this next week to see more about them.

I am currently reading...

I have a huge pile of books next to the bed right now that I am working my way through. Here is one that I am in the middle of right now.

For many of us, moving the truth of God’s love from our heads to our hearts is a lifelong process. As we consider our inadequacies or grieve our shattered dreams, we find it difficult to believe that God cares for us personally.

In this life-giving book, Joanna Weaver shows you how to embrace the truth that Jesus loves you apart from anything you accomplish, apart from anything you bring. Just as He called Lazarus forth to new life, Jesus wants to free you to live fully in the light of His love, unbound from the graveclothes of fear, regret, and self-condemnation.

Combining unforgettable real-life illustrations with unexpected biblical insights, Joanna Weaver invites you to experience a spiritual resurrection that will forever change your understanding of what it means to be the one Jesus loves.

I will be sharing more on April 8th which is my date assigned for this blog tour/review.

I have also been reading,

Wade’s ranch home needs a woman’s touch. Abigail’s life needs a cowboy’s touch.

Four years ago, rodeo celebrity Wade Ryan gave up his identity to protect his daughter. Now, settled on a ranch in Big Sky Country, he lives in obscurity, his heart guarded by a high, thick fence.

Abigail Jones isn’t sure how she went from big-city columnist to small-town nanny, but her new charge is growing on her, to say nothing of her ruggedly handsome boss. Love blossoms between Abigail and Wade–despite her better judgment. Will the secrets she brought with her to Moose Creek, Montana separate her from the cowboy who finally captured her heart?

This has been a lighthearted and fun read for me so far. Review coming on April 13th.

What we have been watching...

Bryan and I watched this this weekend. If you are a Christian then I am going to guess that you have heard Nate Saint and are familiar with his story. This movie continues the story and legacy told through Nates grandson. I don't want to say anymore because we were sent this for a review and I want to save the rest for my written review- coming soon. *Wink*

On my mind...

Missouri. We are taking a quick trip up in a few weeks. It's what Natalie and Emmy have requested for their birthdays this year. We are looking forward to time with family (even though it will be a quick trip this time) and we are hoping to bring home a new family member with us (another puppy) from the farm.

I will be working hard this week on book reviews. I have a lot of them coming up in April.

We have a busy week of school ahead of us. Especially with us taking some time off these past two weeks. Lots of work to get done and things to get accomplished. It will be nice to get back into the flow of schooling though. I think it's oftentimes harder for me to jump back in than it is for the kids.

I have a lot of blog posts to get written too. So much to share. My blogging kind of took a bit of a hiatus these past two weeks. Oh well- sometimes life prevents blogging- no matter how much you love it.

My Life With Fibro...

My pain levels were not too bad this past week until the storms moved through this weekend. A couple of hours before the storms hit on Friday night- I could literally feel my muscle pain rising. Even after 7 years of living with Fibro now, it still amazes me how storms can affect my pain levels like that, in the same way they affect someone with arthritis. Speaking of arthritis, my next physical is in August and I am thinking that I am going to have them test me for inflammation and arthritis then. It runs in my moms side of the family (though my mom doesn't have it) and my toe and finger pain has been awful lately. I have always dealt with foot pain with my Fibro but not toe pain. One of the first things I am noticing when I awake in the mornings is how tender my toes feel- even before I start moving or using them. It's really been driving me crazy. I guess I should put that on my prayer list above- I will just ask here that you be praying for me over it.

My sensitivity to bring lights has been very sensitive these past few weeks too.

In the kitchen...

Bryan is working late a lot this week- camp season is about to push into full swing which will mean many late nighters for him in the months ahead. He will be taking some time off next week to deal with our house hunting and lender visits, etc. And then with time off the following week when we head to Missouri- he has a lot of things to accomplish this week at work. I tend to go the easier route on dinners when he's not home for them. I'm not sure why? I still have 6 kids to feed- I just always have done quick and easy when Bryan is working late. So this weeks menu plan includes a lot of tacos, taco salad, spaghetti, beef stroganoff, homemade pizzas, etc. All those things that can be whipped up quickly. While I love spending time in the kitchen I actually don't plan to spend much of it in the kitchen this next week.

Around the House...

While Bryan was home this past week we jumped into slowly cleaning out and organizing the garage. We have boxes and bins in the garage that we have literally picked up and carried from one house to the next (well, garage to garage) over the past 10 years. Can you believe that? Not happening again on this move though. We are bound and determined that every single box and bin will be looked at, organized, etc. We have a pile of stuff that we are saving for a yard sale that we plan to have on April 9th (heads up local friends) and we hauled 5 boxes of stuff off to the thrift store this past week. Things that we need to keep are being put in bins and labeled carefully. It's making a mess of things around here- but it's necessary. Between switching Winter clothes for Spring and the garage stuff- we have piles in the living room, kitchen, etc. I guess you could say life is a bit crazy right now but I am hoping this current craziness pays off down the road.

Random Trivia/Fun Fact for the week...

There are over 58 million dogs in the US. How amazing is that!

Quote of the week...

"The good news of salvation must be heralded to the ends of the earth. Jesus is Lord! He reigns on high and is coming again in majesty and power. Just the thought makes the heart almost miss a beat in wonder! We may not amount to much, we have a great Savior, and His Kingdom is forever." ~ Robert Coleman (author of The Master plan of Evangelism).

This was a quote on our sermon notes and one that was apart of our pastors sermon last night. So very very true!

Some of my favorite things about this past week...

Saturday morning before the storms kicked in Bryan took the kids "Lion hunting". *Grin* It was all Camdens idea. He came in from playing outside this past week and announced that we had lions and hippos in our backyard. He wanted to go hunt some of the lions. Here's a few pictures of their Saturday morning Lion hunt in the woods behind our house.

A few of my favorite photos from this past week...

The kids reaction to Bryan 4 wheel driving down a rural country dirt road.

"Waiting for daddy"

"I could drive this thing. If only they would let me try!"

Have a great week, friends!

Blast From the Past~ Week 5

So what happens when you have some sickness followed by hubbys vacation? You miss a week of Blast From Past.

Bryan went back to work at the end of this week and the kids and I are slowly working on getting back into our normal routine again. We did some school week before last. It was Spring break here where we live and since the kids friends who are in public school were off, I let the kids focus on their basics only in the mornings and then take the afternoons off to play outside with their friends. Then we took this past week off because it was Bryans vacation. So in many ways I feel like we have had two weeks off of school even though technically it has really one been one. I have to say that the break has been nice.

Anyway- Houstons 14th Birthday was on the 15th of this month and so instead of continuing with my theme of crafts for the month of March, I wanted to take this weeks Blast from the Past to share a few old photos of him from his first year. The years sure have zoomed by fast! Some of these pictures are a bit blurry because I had to take pictures of the pictures.

Destination Disney~ First Trip Memories

This past weeks Destination Disney post over at Heidi's Reviews and Reflections was about First Trip Memories. I had planned to get this post up before now but between sickness and Bryans vacation....well, it just didn't happen. The really nice thing about Heidi's Disney posts is that she keeps the submissions open for a couple of weeks after she posts them (thank you for that Heidi)!

So.....our first and only trip that we have taken so far to Walt Disney World was in April of 2006. We were living in Charlotte, North Carolina at the time. I was 6 months pregnant with Camden. We drove from North Carolina down to Orlando. Surprisingly it only took us 9 hours to make the trip (and that was with me- a pregnant women with a weak bladder in the car) *Wink*

We spent months planning the trip out which for me I do believe was almost as much fun as the trip itself. We bought a book about Walt Disney (300 pages long) and read the entire thing- numerous times, to learn every detail we could about the parks. We visited our local Disney store and bought matching tee shirts for everyone. I wanted matching clothes for the kids to help better keep track of everyone in the crowded parks, but yes, it was also an excuse to buy cute Disney shirts. Actually- Bryan and I figured it was probably cheaper to buy them at the local Disney store on sale rather than once we got to Walt Disney World, and we were right. We made a special shoe shopping trip too to make sure everyone had the most comfortable shoes possible, knowing we would be walking a lot during the week. We also invested in some camping gear as we had decided to stay at Camp Wilderness Resort during our week at Disney. It was the cheapest way for our large family to go to Walt Disney World.

On the day we arrived at Walt Disney World, which was a Sunday night, we rolled into Camp Wilderness around 5pm. There were shouts of excitement from the back seats when we saw our first Walt Disney World sign!

I have to share that we were highly impressed with Camp Wilderness! The staff, the entire resort, everything about it. If you enjoy camping like us, it's definitely the way to go when visiting Walt Disney World. If your not a camper, they do offer cabins at Camp Wilderness that are really nice too. We tent camped. We have a 10 person tent that has two sections in it and it's what we slept in every night at Disney. We took a queen size blow up mattress for Bryan and I to sleep on as we didn't think we could last a week on the ground- especially me being pregnant. We couldn't have ended up with a better camping space either. We were right next to the bathrooms but there were enough trees in between us and the bathrooms that we were not bothered by the bathroom traffic at all. We just took a little path that ran between the trees when we needed to go to the bathroom (which for a pregnant women was nice in the middle of the night). The shuttle bus stop was also with in a hop, skip, and jump from our camping site. The site itself was very private with electricity, water, and a picnic table. We took down our camping stove and a lot of foods for breakfasts to try to save some money. We cooked a big breakfast every morning at the campsite before hitting the parks. We also took a lot of snacks with us and some things for lunches. We would eat a big breakfast, usually hit the parks around 9:30am or so and eat a light lunch (like pretzels) and then a big dinner at the parks each day.

First picture taken after putting our feet on Disney soil- at our campground site.

After we got checked in and got our tent, bed, sleeping bags, and everything else set up and unloaded at our site, it was around 7pm. It just so happened that the Magic Kingdom had extended hours that night until 2am. We are late nighters as is and the kids had napped in the car that day on the drive down. We just couldn't see sitting around the campsite that night. We were too eager to get out and experience some Disney fun so we decided to hit The Magic Kingdom. I still remember the excitement that we all felt on that first night- especially the kids.

Bryan and I both grew up on the West Coast. In fact, we grew up in Southern California, only 2 hours from Disneyland. My family visited Disneyland a couple of times a year. I have such fond memories of those trips and I have always loved anything related to Disney. Bryan and I had neither one even been to Florida prior to this Disney trip though. I have one aunt that had visited Walt Disney World on a couple of occasions and she always came back to California raving about it but I have to confess to not really understanding what all of the fuss was about back then. I didn't realize just how different Walt Disney World was from Disneyland in California until my adult years and truly- I didn't fully understand it until our research for our trip began. California Adventure didn't even exist when I was growing up in California- it was just Disneyland. So picture the Magic Kingdom alone with nothing else Disney around it except Los Angeles. There were hotels that our family stayed at around Disneyland on our trips but they were not Disney owned hotels or resorts like at Walt Disney World. Walt Disney World really is it's own WORLD. I understand that now. *Wink* And don't get me wrong- Disneyland in California was always awesome and still is! But it's not Walt Disney World.

To get from Camp Wilderness to the Magic Kingdom you took a ferry boat. You took a shuttle to get to all of the other parks but can only get to MK using the boat.

Houston waiting to board the ferry.

It's a beautiful ride from Camp Wilderness to the Magic Kingdom! We arrived at Magic Kingdom that first night around 8pm. I know that probably sounds crazy since our kids were so young, and it probably was, but I think we were all going off of excitement that night. Ally who was a toddler at the time did fall asleep around 10pm in the stroller. We took in Mickeys Toontown first, and then headed over to the Dumbo ride. We bought some pretzels while waiting to board Dumbo. You know, those yummy pretzels that Disney serves with the warm cream cheese inside of them. Man those things are good!

Bryan, Annie, and Natalie, on Dumbo.

The fireworks show that they give each night over the castle just happened to take place while we were waiting in line for Dumbo. It was a wonderful spot to watch the show from by the way.

Does anyone do fireworks as well as Disney? I think not.

After we finished riding Dumbo we headed over to the Pooh Adventure ride and It's a Small World and we started noticing that the crowds were drastically thinning at that point. Everyone seemed to be heading out after the fireworks show. For the next couple of hours we practically had the park to ourselves. We walked right up to the rides and hopped on. We enjoyed Poohs playground, It's a Small World (rode a couple of times), Peter Pan, The Bear Jamboree Show (a favorite of mine from my childhood), and The Jungle Cruise that first night. It was wonderful!

Natalie on It's A Small World ride.

Bryan and the girls on the Jungle Cruise- which by the way is really fun to ride after dark.

We left the park at 1am and got back to our resort shortly after.

Main Street that night as we were leaving. Blurry- but I still love this picture. There is something magical about Main Street.

We spent 7 days total at Walt Disney World. On Day 2 we visited The Animal Kingdom. Our favorite memory from that day is by far the Lion King show. Incredible Show that amazed us!

On day 3, Tuesday, we decided to hang around Camp Wilderness and take it easy. They offer so much at Camp Wilderness that you could not leave the resort for days and still have plenty to do. It's truly amazing. I'll have to save all of that for another post though or this one will end up way too long. *Smile* We spent a good portion of day 3 on the beach of our resort. The kids had a ball playing in the sand and water. They have a store set up on the beach and we bought sand pails with shovels for the kids to play with and ice cream and some other things throughout the day.

On day 4, Wednesday, we headed out early that morning for Epcot. I don't think there was anything about Epcot that our family didn't like. In fact I can't really bring myself to chose my favorite memories from that day because I loved every single moment! Epcot is simple awesome! The entire park is such a genius idea.

The kids outside of Under the Seas

Seeing a real live Manatee in Under the Seas was pretty cool. It was a first for all of us, Bryan and I included.

Day 5, Thursday, we headed back to the Magic Kingdom for a full day at the park this time. Man what a fun day it was. We saw a lot of characters that day which the kids loved and we really lucked out on lines and not having to wait for anything. It wasn't that the park wasn't crowded but we just somehow missed the long lines. There were even a couple of instances that we passed a ride that had a really long line on the way to ride something else and when we finally got around to riding the ride that had a long line previously- we walked right up and got on. When we would exit- the line was long again. I think God had an angel walking with us that day. It was really nice to not have to stand and wait in long lines with the kids ages being so small and me being pregnant.

Houston really enjoyed the Buzz Light Year ride and meeting Buzz afterwards. He was really into Buzz Lightyear at the time.

Emmy and Annies favorite part of Day 5 was being chosen by Belle to participate in a Beauty and the Beast play next to the castle.

We took in the parade that night and lucked out in getting a great front row seat for it.

On Day 6, Friday, we spent most of the day at Downtown Disney. I would say our favorite memory from Downtown Disney was eating at Planet Hollywood for lunch that day. It was the first time we had experienced a Planet Hollywood. We had visited Hard Rock Cafes before and had heard that Planet Hollywoods were similar but personally, I think Planet Hollywood restaurants are much more fun than Hard Rocks. All of the movie memorablia around the restaurant really was fun to experience.

One of the Herbie bugs hanging above where we sat.

I couldn't resist taking this picture of the inside of the women's bathroom in Planet Hollywood. So fun!

Day 7, our last day at Walt Disney World, we visited MGM Studios which I think is now known as Hollywood studios? MGM reminded me a little of Universal Studios in California which I visited a lot as a young girl.

By far the highlight of our time at MGM was seeing the Beauty and the Beast Musical Show and the car stunt show. We all loved the stunt show, but Houston especially loved it.

A few favorite memories from our time at Camp Wilderness that week include....

*Watching the Electric Light Show parade on the water from the beach of our resort.

*Watching the Magic Kingdom fireworks show from the beach of our resort. Camp Wilderness gives a great view of the show.

* Sing Alongs that they have every evening with Chip and Dale.

and last but certainly not least......

*Disney movies shown on a big theater sized screen outside each evening. The movies always begin following the sing along with Chip and Dale. They set up a bon fire and you can roast marshmallows or hot dogs over the fire prior to the movie starting. They also have a snack stand set up where you can get things like coke, hot dogs, popcorn, and such. We watched a double feature on our last night at Camp Wilderness. Of course they show only Disney movies. I remember that one of movie was 101 Dalmations and I can't remember the name of the other Disney movie that they showed that night but I do remember that it was about a pigeon that carried a message somewhere. LOL! They show different movies every night of the week and you don't have to be staying at Camp Wilderness to attend them. They are free. Just take the ferry from whatever resort your staying at over to Camp Wilderness. We took marshmallows that night to roast and enjoyed making smores before the movie started.

And I do believe that pretty much sums up our favorite memories from our first Walt Disney World vacation. Hopefully we can make some more memories this next year.
